Fifteen female students from schools in Lira City have been arrested at a guest house in Kirombe Ward over allegations of engaging in prostitution.

The students were arrested at Barapua Guest House on Wednesday following a tip-off from members of the public, according to Kirombe East LC1 Chairperson James Obua.

Obua says residents alerted local leaders on Tuesday , prompting follow-up inquiries that led to the operation the last evening. He alleges that the girls, aged between 19 and 25, had been staying at the guest house for four days and were reportedly bringing men to the facility. However, no men were found at the premises during the operation.

Obua further claims that some of the students had been sent home to collect school fees but instead ended up engaging in activities suspected to be prostitution.

He said the students were handed over to police of Starch Factory Police Outpost as investigations continue.

James Obua, the LC1 chairperson for Kirombe East cell, speaks about the incident.

Meanwhile, Kirombe Ward LC2 Chairperson, Patrick Okello Owiny has blamed what he described as excessive freedom given to children by their parents for the incident.

Okello says local leaders want police to summon the school authorities and parents of the arrested students to establish the circumstances under which the girls ended up at the guest house instead of attending to their studies.

He has also warned criminals operating in the area to stop their activities, saying local security teams remain vigilant to maintain peace and order.
