Planting for the future: KCB Bank, Climate Hub green Lira City school

LIRA CITY: The Inspector of Schools for Lira City East Division has urged headteachers to actively involve learners in tree planting as part of efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental conservation.

Monica Grace Adong made the call on Friday during the launch of a tree-planting exercise at iBurlobo Rock View Primary School in Ayago Ward, Lira City East Division.

The event saw the donation of tree seedlings by KCB Bank Uganda in partnership with Climate Hub International.Adong said the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly severe and require collective action from schools, communities, religious leaders and other stakeholders.

She encouraged school administrators to integrate tree planting into school activities and inspire learners to plant and care for trees both at school and in their homes.She noted that involving children in environmental conservation at an early age will help build a generation that values and protects nature.

Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Opio, Parish Priest of Uganda Matyrs Lira Cathedral, called on local and religious leaders to lead by example in promoting environmental conservation. He urged leaders to continuously sensitize communities on the importance of planting trees to restore the environment.

Fr. Opio revealed that he has already planted about 4,000 trees and intends to continue expanding tree cover through annual planting initiatives.

Lira City East Division Councilor, Charles Opio Olol welcomed the initiative but noted that iBurlobo Rock View Primary School continues to face challenges affecting learning, particularly the shortage of desks.

He said he would continue lobbying government and development partners for support to improve learning conditions at the school.

Meanwhile, the headteacher of Burlobo Rock View Primary School, Bonny Lino Okello, said the donated seedlings will not only improve the school’s environment but also provide fruits for learners in the future.He pledged that the school would ensure the trees are properly cared for until they mature.

Daniel Ayena, the Branch Manager of KCB Bank, said the donation forms part of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

Ayena said KCB Bank procured more than 800 tree seedlings for the initiative and urged the school administration to nurture them. He added that the bank would monitor the project to assess the survival and growth of the trees.iBurlobo Rock View Primary School, located in Ayago Ward in Lira City East Division, has an enrolment of more than 900 pupils.

The tree-planting initiative is expected to improve the school’s environment while contributing to broader efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.
