Three dead as canoe overturns at Kitwee landing site in Amolatar district

Three fishermen have died after their canoe reportedly capsized on the waters at Kitwe Landing Site in Amolatar District.The deceased have been identified as Ambrose Omara, Ronald Elilo, and Nicholas Emolo, all residents of Obago village in Alyicmeda Parish, Agwingiri Sub-county.

According to Morris Ogwang, who was at the scene, the three men reportedly left for fishing at around 6pm on 8/05/2026 using a canoe from Kitwe Landing site, but they never returned.Their disappearance prompted local residents and fellow fishermen to begin searching for them.

Ogwang says the bodies were later discovered floating in the water by fishermen who had gone fishing at around 12 noon the following day.

Morris Ogwang, a resident of the area says the 3 went fishing together but never returned.

Tom Ouni, the councilor representing Alyicmeda Parish, says preliminary information suggests that strong winds may have overturned the canoe, although no one witnessed the accident.Ouni says the victims had temporarily moved to Kitwe landing site for fishing activities.

He adds that the bodies were retrieved at around midday and later handed over to relatives for burial arrangements.

The incident has once again raised concerns over safety on water transport and fishing activities on the lake, especially during periods of strong winds and bad weather conditions. Local leaders are urging fishermen to prioritize safety measures while on the water.
