Police in Dokolo District are investigating the suspected murder of a 45-year-old man whose body was recovered floating in Olweny Swamp in Agwata Town Council. The deceased has been identified as Ogwal Jimmy John, a resident of Okwor Cell, Tetugo “A” Ward in Agwata Town Council. Ogwal, who was also serving as the LC1 Secretary of Okwor Cell, reportedly disappeared after leaving home to socialize with friends at Tetugo Trading Centre.

According to Jimmy Patrick Okema, the police spokesperson for North Kioga, the incident was first reported on May 10, 2026, by Christine Alele, the wife of the deceased, after receiving information that a shirt and SIM card suspected to belong to her husband had been found near the staff quarters of Next Generation Primary School in Agwata Town Council.

Okema said preliminary findings indicate that Ogwal left home on May 9 at around 2pm and spent the evening drinking with friends. At about 10pm, he was allegedly heavily intoxicated and was being escorted home by a friend identified only as Obala, who reportedly left him along the way. Ogwal never returned home.

He said the situation took a tragic turn on May 12 when a fisherman, Joel Obim, discovered the body floating in Olweny Swamp while fishing. He immediately informed local leaders, who alerted police.

A team of detectives from Dokolo Central Police Station, led by homicide investigators and scene of crime officers, visited and documented the scene before recovering the body. The remains were later transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Police have since arrested four suspects, all teachers attached to Next Generation Primary School in Agwata Town Council, to assist with investigations.

The suspects have been identified as Olot Jaspher, Opio Justine Innocent, Okello Benedict Moses and Ojwok Samuel Baker.Investigators also recovered exhibits, including the deceased’s shirt, as inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death continue.

Okema said police are still recording statements from witnesses and will revisit the bar where the deceased was last seen drinking, as well as the area where the shirt and SIM card were recovered.

He adds that the postmortem report is expected to guide further investigations before the case file is forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

He therefore urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators as efforts to establish the exact cause of death continue.
