8 months old baby rescued from school pit latrine in Apac

Police in Apac District have launched investigations into a shocking case of attempted murder after rescuing a baby girl who had allegedly been dumped alive in a pit latrine at Apac Pride Nursery and Primary School in Temogo A Cell, Arocha Division, Apac Municipality.

The police spokesperson for North Kioga, Jimmy Patrick Okema said the incident happened in the early hours of 23rd May 2026 and was reported at around 3:32pm by the school watchman, 23-year-old Eling Brian.

Okema said preliminary police findings, the watchman heard persistent cries coming from the school toilet area at about 3:00am. After checking the scene, he suspected that a child was trapped inside the pit latrine and quickly alerted officers at Apac Central Police Station.

He said a team of police officers responded immediately and confirmed that a baby had indeed been dumped inside the pit latrine. The District Police Commander, SP Mirembe Norah, then coordinated with the North Kyoga Police Fire and Rescue Services to carry out an emergency rescue operation.

Okema said the joint rescue team successfully retrieved the baby girl alive from the pit latrine. He adds that the child is believed to be about eight months old. She was rushed to Apac Main Hospital where she is currently receiving treatment and care.He says preliminary investigations indicate that the school is a private institution operating from nursery to Primary Four.

He also noted that the school has no perimeter fence and that the pit latrine openings are wide, making the premises easily accessible.According to him, statements have so far been recorded from the school director, Sarah Ayugi, and the watchman who reported the matter.

However, the identity of the child and her parents or guardians remains unknown, and no arrests have yet been made.He says police have since registered a case of attempted murder and say investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible. Authorities suspect that domestic violence or child neglect could be among the possible causes behind the incident.
