Kwania District, in collaboration with SIV Fund, has planted 7,000 trees in Inomo Forest Reserve in a bid to conserve the environment.

The tree species planted in Inomo Forest Reserve include Mvule, mahogany and tamarind, among others.

Kwania District Forest Officer Esther Magala said the district intends to restore Inomo Forest Reserve to bring back the tree species that previously existed there and make the forest a learning resource for young people in schools.

Magala said they also want to encourage communities to participate in environmental conservation activities to ensure the proper restoration and management of Inomo Forest Reserve.

SIV Fund Coordinator Nelson Ogwal said the initiative aims to mobilise communities to participate in activities that help many people understand and respond to the effects of climate change, which are increasingly affecting different parts of the world.

Ogwal said they have been working with local leaders and relevant stakeholders to sensitise communities about environmental conservation.

He added that the organisation is working with different groups in Kwania District to promote these efforts.

Ogwal said 5,000 trees were planted in the first rain season, followed by another 2,000 trees in the second season, bringing the total to 7,000 trees.

He expressed hope that the initiative would contribute to the fight against climate change.

Meanwhile, Monica Akidi, a member of the Ket-can Itic group based at Akolomom, said that before they began sensitising communities and engaging stakeholders in forest conservation, many people were cutting down trees indiscriminately.

However, she said tree cutting has now declined.

Stella Akello, a member of the Paraligo Drama Group in Apumik, Agwiciri Parish, said her group is currently using songs and drama to sensitise communities about environmental conservation and the importance of protecting forests.
