North Kyoga police region tops the 2022 crime report

Lira city – North Kyoga police region has registered the highest number of cases, the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2022 shows.

According to the report released on Wednesday at the police headquarters in Naguru, North Kyoga registered 17,605 cases followed by KMP North with 16,691 cases, KMP South with 14,492 cases, Rwizi with 14,204 cases and Albertine with 13,544 cases.

The Annual Crime Report 2022 which was launched on Wednesday by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martin Okoth Ochola indicated an increase of crimes reported to police by 18% compared to the previous years.

“It is my pleasure to present the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report for 2022 as a form of accountability to the population on how the Uganda Police Force is fulfilling its mandate as stipulated under Article 212 of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. In 2022, we note that there was an 18% increase in the number of crimes reported to Police from 196,081 cases reported in 2021 to 231,653 cases mainly due to the full opening of the economy after the Covid-19 lockdown and growing confidence to report crime to Police”, said the IGP.

According to Ochola ,out of the total cases reported to Police in 2022, 68,405 cases were taken to Court, 26,749 cases were not proceeded with, while 136,499 cases were still under inquiry citing an improvement compared to 2021 where 65,008 cases were taken to Court, 60,095 cases not proceeded with and 70,978 cases under inquiries

Meanwhile, theft and assault where highly recorded in the 2022 crime report.The latest 2022 police annual crime report shows that theft has maintained its position as the leading crime committed in Uganda with 61,508 cases registered representing 26.5% of the total crime committed in 2022.

According to the report, there has been a general increase in cases of theft from 41,950 cases reported to Police in 2020.

Police records show that most of the theft cases were mainly motivated by economic gain.

Meanwhile, over 29,000 suspects were arrested out of which 26,000 were male adults, 1400 female adults, 600 male juveniles, and 94 female juveniles.

Assault is in the meantime highlighted as the second among leading crimes with 32,041 cases registered representing 13.8% of the total reported cases in the year.
