Foot and mouth disease breaks out in Alebtong

Alebtong district local government authorities are considering imposing a ban on the movement of animals in and out of Ajuiri County following the outbreak of deadly foot and Mouth disease.

On Wednesday 15th ,2023, a team from the Production and Marketing Committee in the district visited Adwir Parish and Alololo parishes in Adwir Sub County and confirmed the outbreak of the disease.

Led by DK Odongo, the Alebtong district LCV Chairperson, the team discovered that the most affected Parishes in Adwir Sub County are Olwero, Ocokober, Alolololo and Adwir.

According to Odongo, it is necessary to temporarily halt the sales of Cows at Adwir market with effect of Friday this week

Dr. Charles Noki, the District Veterinary Officer confirmed the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Adwir and Angetta Sub Counties

Dr Noki said he has written to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and animal husbandry requesting for the Vaccines to be used for the vaccinations of Cattles in Ajuri County.

He explains that they have also asked the Ministry to consider imposing a ban on the sale and movement of Cattles in the entire Ajuri County.

According to him, the community can use other methods such as the use of salt to treat their Cows.

He confirms that over 1000 cows are already carrying the disease in Adwir, Angetta and other Sub Counties.
