Ajuri County Member of parliament Denis Hamson Obua has called on politicians and the community in Alebtong district to shun politics of hatred, intrigue and instead concentrate on peace and development.

‘’TEAM-means Together everyone achieves meaningfully’’ Obua explained as he underscored the importance of team work at the lower local government level. His message was targeting LCIII chairpersons of all the sub counties in Ajuri constituency, chairpersons of school management committees and head teachers drawn from at least six primary schools whose infrastructure was wanting.

Obua called for team work and said he and the district leadership is working as a team despite different political affiliations and said as politicians in Alebtong, they are devoted towards the development of the district.

He appealed to the leaders of the lower local governments at sub county level to join hands, coordinate and embrace team work in a bid to achieve development in Alebtong district.

He was speaking in regard to the recent altercations between some section of the community in Awei sub county and the security organs over the disputed chunk of land in former Adero Quarantine.

The community claims ownership of the land which has since been taken over by Uganda prisons and the high court sitting in Lira is yet to come up with a ruling in coming weeks. But last week a section of politicians allegedly instigated the area residents to begin farming on the land but they were repelled by security officers. At least 29 people were arrested and remanded to Alebtong government prison. Police have since summoned Emmanuel Ongom Okwel, a former contestant for Ajuri County Mp seat in the last election to record a statement following reports that he misled the locals to invade the contested land.

On Saturday MP Obua expressed dismay at the incident and regretted that unscrupulous politicians were taking advantage of the community for their egoistic interest and he visited the 29 people who have been remanded.

‘’There was confrontation with security forces because the community did not respect the law and they were ill advised by some politicians who unfortunately live in Lira but want to escalate violence ‘’the GCW observed

‘’Now those who have been misleading the community and preaching violence, where are they?’’ When there are issues, let us accept to dialogue and puts facts on table nut let us desist from violence he added.

Denis Hamson Obua made the remarks on Saturday while handing over 300 iron sheets to six primary government schools in his constituency some of which had their rooftops blown off by win. The schools include Angem P/S in Adwir sub county, Okokolako P/S in Omoro sub county, Awelo Kur Icok P/S in Angeta sub county, Aput community school in Amugu, Arwot P/S in Awei Sub county and Amononeno P/S in Abako Sub county. The function was held at Alebtong district headquarters.

Obua said he wrote to the office of the of the prime minister and lobbied for the iron sheets following letters of request from the school heads of the affected schools through the district leadership of Alebtong

The government chief whip meanwhile assured the community to be calm because the iron sheets that he recently handed over to government senior secondary schools in his constituency were not stolen iron sheets and that he has no case to answer.

‘’What is the basis of the allegation, may be if I had used it to roof a house for my birds but I took them to government institutions, I think people should stop playing to the gallery especially those who are conversant with the law because an issue of theft does not arise here, an offence is defined in the law and it must be stated, and there should be ingredients and if there are people who understand the law, let them tell me which law I have breached and the offence’ ’Obua charged.

Obua said he will not relent but continue to lobby for more iron sheets to rehabilitate dilapidated structures in needy schools in his constituency and tasked the district to ensure clear accountability of the iron sheets donated by the office of the prime minister. Obua stressed that education and human capital development is reliant on an efficient and functional education system pledging that he will support infrastructural development of schools so that future generations can thrive and replace.

Speaking during the handover of the iron sheets, Dickens Kennedy Odongo, the district LCV chairperson of Alebtong commended the area MP Denis Obua for ably representing the constituency and amplifying the voice of the community.

Odongo said he received a letter from Geoffrey Sseremba, the permanent secretary in the office of the prime minister responding in the affirmative to a letter written on February 8th 2023 by Denis Obua requesting for iron sheets for the six primary schools.

DK Odongo who subscribes to the opposition Uganda People’s Congress party unlike MP Obua who is NRM, called for unity and team work across the political divide. The district boss said he, the Government Chief Whip Denis Obua, the district woman MP Dorcus Acen and Moroto County MP Samuel Okwir Odwe are all focused towards the socio economic transformation of the community.

Tom Aliro, the chairperson school management committee of Aput primary school could not hide his happiness about the fifty irons sheets allotted to his school and commended the area MP for lobbying with the office of the prime minister. Aliro says their pupils will finally have a decent structure for learning.
