Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal Foundation is set to distribute over 50,000 fruit trees in schools in Dokolo district in a move aimed at preserving the environment.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed yesterday at the Dokolo District Chief Administrative Officer’s Boardroom between Dokolo district authorities and Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal Foundation represented by Dr. Rosemary Alwoc-Ogwal, Chief Operations Officer of the Foundation.
Dr. Alwoc noted that the district intends to implement school greening program in 48 schools aimed at restoring and preserving the environment against climate change.
Alwoc revealed that before the death of the Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal, she had proposed a school greening initiative following a devastated farm lands and infrastructure from regular flash floods. She added that her mother had proposed a program of planting fruit trees as part of environmental education and ‘greening schools’ in Dokolo.
According to Alwoc, the foundation will plant more than 50,000 fruit trees to complement the nutrition of learners in schools as well as income generating venture.
This nature restoration project should contribute towards helping Uganda meet their objective of greening by 2030.
Dokolo District Senior Environmental & Conservation Officer, Isaac Okola, stated that they have welcomed the project emphasizing the need to survey the land offered by the academic institutions to ensure the seedlings are planted in schools.
He lauded Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal Foundation in taking lead in the environment management and f urged the beneficiaries to protect and manage it well.
Meanwhile the Acting District Education Officer for Dokolo, Pastor Morris Odung Omara, embraced the initiative of planting fruit trees in all schools saying that nature restoration care for environment is vital
The Resident District Commissioner of Dokolo, Barbara Akech pledged to support the greening project stressing that fruit trees will support the school financially during harvest and will act as the learner’s diet.She noted that the plants will also provide the youth, teachers and leaders with environmental education strategically in reducing environmental pollution.
The Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal Foundation was officially re-launched on 21 February 2026 in Kampala by His Excellency, Gen. (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in an ocassion attended by, vice president, Her Excellency, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Rose Epel Alupo, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the most Reverend, Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, His Royal Highness, Won Nyaci me Lango, Dr. Eng. Michael Moses Odongo Okune and Mzee Lamek Smart Ogwal, the husband to the late Cecilia Atim Ogwal, among others to ensure that the legacy of the late continues.
The Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal Foundation continues the social and economic community programs of the late legislator. Cecilia Atim Ogwal was known for her philanthropic work, including sponsoring the education of more than 5,000 students annually and supporting religious leaders across denominations across Lango sub-region.
Mrs. Ogwal, one of Uganda’s longest-serving female legislators, passed away on 18 January 2024 at the age of 77.
