UPC President Jimmy Akena urges Ugandans to vote wisely in LC I elections

The President of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Hon. Jimmy Michael Akena, has urged Ugandans to actively participate in the forthcoming Local Council One (LC I) elections, describing the polls as the cornerstone of Uganda’s democratic governance and the foundation for effective grassroots leadership.

Akena made the remarks during the party’s weekly Wednesday press conference held at the UPC headquarters, Uganda House, in Kampala.

He called on voters to make independent and merit-based decisions when electing their leaders, warning against the practice of demanding or accepting money in exchange for votes. According to Akena, vote-buying and bribery perpetuate corruption and undermine democratic values.

The UPC leader also appealed for unity among elected leaders, urging them to rise above personal and political differences and instead work together to address the pressing social and economic challenges affecting communities across the country.

Akena further challenged Members of Parliament, particularly those in the Opposition and from the UPC, to place national interests above partisan politics during the 12th Parliament.

He urged legislators to intensify the fight against corruption, strengthen oversight of government programmes, improve service delivery, and enact laws that respond to the needs and aspirations of ordinary Ugandans.

The UPC president emphasized that Opposition leaders should focus less on political rivalry and more on promoting accountability, effective legislation, and policies that improve the welfare of citizens.

He also cautioned leaders against allowing political differences to influence the delivery of public services, calling for forgiveness, inclusiveness, and the equitable distribution of government resources to all communities regardless of political affiliation.

As Uganda prepares for the LC I elections, Akena’s message underscores the importance of informed voter participation, accountable leadership, and national unity as essential pillars for strengthening democracy and improving service delivery at the grassroots.
