The University Secretary and Accounting Officer of Muni University, Mr Ambrose Ocen, has appealed to the government to increase its support for St Francis Vocational Technical School in Dokolo District to ease the financial burden on low-income families.

Ocen made the appeal recently while speaking at a fundraising event for St Francis Xavier Dokolo Catholic Parish in Dokolo. He described St Francis Vocational Technical School, which was established under the foundation of Dokolo Catholic Parish, as an important community skills development centre serving learners in Northern Uganda.

Ocen, who is also the Awitong (clan head) of the Otengoro Olang Clan, said their advocacy is focused on addressing some of the major challenges affecting vocational education in the region.

He called on the government to consider taking full responsibility for the institution or providing substantial financial support to reduce tuition costs for parents struggling to meet the educational needs of their children.

Ocen also highlighted the shortage of modern machinery and specialised equipment required to deliver practical training in courses such as carpentry, tailoring and electrical installation.

He further appealed to the Ministry of Education and Sports to deploy government-paid instructors to the institution, saying this would help the school attract and retain qualified technical tutors.

Ocen highlights challenges affecting St Francis Vocational Technical School.

With an enrolment of about 500 learners, St Francis Vocational Technical School provides practical skills training to young people, enabling them to contribute skilled labour to the local economy.

Ocen’s appeal comes amid continued efforts by the government and other stakeholders to expand access to technical and vocational education and training, particularly for young people from economically disadvantaged households.
