Lira City — Akia Parish in Lira Archdeaconry, under the Diocese of Lango, has launched a fruit-tree planting initiative targeting catechists’ homes to improve household incomes, promote self-reliance and support environmental conservation.
The project was officially launched on Sunday at St Janani Luwum Agali Church of Uganda by Peter Okello, a synod member of Akia Parish.
Speaking to a Radio Wa reporter after the launch, Okello said the initiative aims to ensure that every catechist plants at least five fruit trees at home as an additional source of income.
He explained that the project would promote the growing of various fruit trees, including oranges, avocados and mangoes, enabling catechists to generate income from fruit sales while providing nutritious food for their families.
Okello added that, beyond improving household incomes, the initiative could contribute to environmental conservation if properly implemented.
He encouraged Christians in the community to embrace fruit farming, noting that it offers an opportunity to improve livelihoods, strengthen household food security and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
The fruit-tree planting project is expected to strengthen the financial independence of catechists while promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable food production within the parish.
The initiative highlights the potential of small-scale fruit farming to improve household welfare and promote self-reliance among church workers. If sustained and expanded, the project could serve as an example of how faith-based institutions can support livelihood improvement, food security and environmental conservation in their communities.
