Lira City: Laziness and reluctance among some young people to form and participate in organised groups have been blamed for limiting their access to government support under the Parish Development Model (PDM) in Lira City.

According to PDM guidelines, 30 per cent of the funds are earmarked for organised youth groups to support income-generating activities and improve household livelihoods.

Musa Opio, Lira City Council Youth Councillor and Secretary for Health, Education and Community-Based Services, said many young people were reluctant to form or join groups, making it difficult for them to benefit from PDM funds and other government programmes targeting entrepreneurship and poverty reduction.

Opio urged young people in Lira City to embrace group formation, work collectively and take advantage of government initiatives aimed at supporting businesses and income-generating activities.

Mr Musa Opio urges young people to actively participate in groups.

Meanwhile, Opio accused some PDM leaders, particularly Parish Development Committees (PDCs), of deliberately excluding young people during the identification and vetting of beneficiaries.

He called on PDM leaders to stop such practices and ensure that funds are distributed to the intended beneficiaries in accordance with government guidelines.

Opio said greater youth participation in organised groups, coupled with transparent beneficiary selection by PDM leaders, was essential if young people were to fully benefit from government poverty-reduction programmes.
