Justice ministry launches succession act sensitisation campaign in Lango

The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs (MoJCA) Lango Regional Office has launched a public sensitisation campaign on the Succession Act aimed at reducing inheritance disputes and addressing information gaps surrounding property ownership, estate management and family inheritance.

The campaign was announced by Simon Peter Muyomba, head of the MoJCA Regional Office for the Lango Sub-region, during an interview with our reporter.

Muyomba said the ministry has prioritised public Baraza engagements as a way of bringing legal information closer to communities and addressing the challenges families face when a relative dies without leaving a will.

He said the next sensitisation engagement is scheduled for September 10 at Lira Mayor’s Garden, where members of the public will be educated on various aspects of succession and estate management.

Key issues to be discussed include the procedures and documents required to open a succession file, how to make a valid will, the benefits of leaving a will and the risks associated with dying without one.

Participants will also be guided on the procedures for accessing bank balances and other documents belonging to a deceased person.

Muyomba said the engagement is expected to attract several key stakeholders, including the Resident District/City Commissioner, Town Clerk, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and representatives from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), among others.

Muyomba warned that in the absence of clear and legally recognised instructions, families often become embroiled in disputes over land, houses, businesses and other forms of property.

He said the absence of a will can also create opportunities for unscrupulous relatives to take advantage of vulnerable family members, particularly widows and children, by attempting to take control of property left behind by the deceased.

The ministry hopes the sensitisation campaign will empower communities with accurate information about succession laws, encourage responsible estate planning and help families avoid prolonged inheritance disputes following the death of a loved one.
