Lango cultural leader unveils dual plan to conserve environment

In a strong move to conserve the environment, the Paramount Chief of Lango, Dr Eng Michael Moses Odongo Okune, has called on the people of Lango to adopt a simple but important rule: for every tree cut down, another should be planted.

The Wonyaci, who has been leading the Greening Lango campaign to restore forest cover, said the initiative was necessary to help communities mitigate the effects of climate change.

He also raised concern over plastic pollution, directing residents to properly dispose of used plastic containers, including water bottles and polythene, at designated collection points.

He urged residents not to dispose of plastic waste in gardens, drainage channels or along roadsides.

Adding weight to the call, the Executive Director of GLOFORD Uganda, Dr Moris Chris Ongom, announced a new initiative called “Wealth from Waste”.

According to Ongom, the programme will collect and recycle harmful waste products and turn them into income-generating opportunities for young people and women. He said discarded plastic bottles could be transformed into sources of income.

The leadership of Lira City has welcomed the initiative. The City Mayor, His Worship Sam Atul, said the programme would go a long way towards keeping Lira City and the wider Lango Sub-region clean and healthy in a bid to conserve environment
