National Cleaning Day goes well in Amugu amid arrests of GISO, and other officials

Alebtong- Despite the successful 2nd National Cleaning Day exercise in Amugu Town Council, the Gombolola Internal Security Officer, GISO, Town Agent of Acek Ward and the LC1 chairperson for Akisim cell in Alebtong District have been arrested and detained at Amugu Town Council Police Station for allegedly holding a meeting during the National Cleaning Day exercise.

Speaking to our news reporter on Saturday morning 29th August 2026 , Jimmy Okello, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner, ARDC, for Alebtong District, confirmed the arrest of GISO Abura Joseph Olwit , Town Agent Odongo Levi and LC1 chairperson yet to be identified.

Okello said the three suspects were arrested in the morning of Saturday and detained at Amugu Town Council Police Station for allegedly violating the National Cleaning Day exercise.

According to the ARDC, while residents and other stakeholders were participating in the cleaning exercise, the GISO and his team were allegedly conducting a meeting with newly elected and former LC1 and LC2 chairpersons at the Amugu Town Council headquarters.

The latest update in the evening, Mr Okello told Radio Wa that three suspect were transferred to Alebtong Central Police Station, CPS, as police continue with investigations into the matter.

Despite the arrests, Assistant RDC described the National Cleaning Day exercise in Alebtong as successful, saying most residents and stakeholders participated.

However, Simon Myers Sserugo, the District Internal Security Officer, DISO, for Alebtong, denied the allegations when contacted for comment.

Sserugo said his office did not instruct anyone to conduct a meeting on Saturday, August 29, 2026, which is designated as a National Cleaning Day.

He said he received a telephone call this morning from ARDC Jimmy Okello informing him about a complaint that had been lodged against his office.

Sserugo maintained that he was not aware of any meeting organized by his office, adding that he is currently out of office on official leave.

Meanwhile, the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, SP, Jimmy Patrick Okema, said the report had not yet reached his office by press time.

Okema explained that he was participating in the National Cleaning Day exercise aimed at keeping Lira City clean, but promised to verify the allegations and provide further information.

The National Cleaning Day is a government initiative observed on the last Saturday of every month. It is intended to encourage Ugandans to clean their homes, workplaces and surrounding communities while promoting environmental cleanliness and public health.
