Lira schools urged to embrace tree planting as KCB Bank donates 800 seedlings,

School authorities in Lira City have been urged to prioritize tree planting within their compounds to protect school infrastructure from strong winds and promote environmental conservation.

The call was made by the Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Lira City East Division, Steven Odongo, during the donation of more than 800 fruit tree seedlings to Burlobo Rock View Nursery and Primary School by KCB Bank’s Lira Branch.

Odongo said many school buildings are damaged by strong winds during the rainy season because of the lack of trees around school compounds. He noted that planting trees not only shields infrastructure but also creates a conducive learning environment and contributes to efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Receiving the donation, the school’s Head Teacher, Bonface Okello Lino, welcomed the contribution, saying the 800 fruit tree seedlings, comprising five different species, will help improve the school environment, provide fruits for learners, and reduce the impact of strong winds if properly maintained.

Lino, however, appealed for additional support, citing inadequate infrastructure at the school. He said the school has an enrolment of more than 968 pupils but only eight latrine stances, raising serious sanitation concerns.

Lira City East Division Councillor Charles Opio Olol commended KCB Bank for supporting environmental conservation through tree planting.

He called on the City Council, development partners, non-governmental organisations, and well-wishers to provide further support to Burlobo Rock View Nursery and Primary School to improve learning conditions and academic performance.

Meanwhile, KCB Bank Lira Branch Manager Daniel Ayena said the donation was made under the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme, which seeks to promote environmental sustainability through tree planting initiatives in schools.

Leaders have encouraged schools across Lira City to embrace tree planting, saying it will not only protect school infrastructure but also improve the environment and contribute to the fight against climate change.
