Farmers across the Lango Sub-region have been urged to reduce their reliance on agro-chemicals and embrace organic farming practices in order to protect soil fertility and safeguard human health.

The call was made by Mr Hendry Alami, Operations Manager of Fidena Agri Uganda Limited, during an exclusive interview with a Radio Wa news reporter.

Mr Alami noted that the excessive use of agro-chemicals by many farmers in the region is contributing to declining soil fertility, which ultimately affects crop productivity and agricultural sustainability.

He explained that many farmers have increasingly turned to chemical-based fertilisers and pesticides while neglecting locally produced organic fertilisers, which help restore soil nutrients and improve long-term soil health.

According to Mr Alami, while agro-chemicals may offer short-term benefits in crop production, their continued misuse can have serious consequences for both the environment and human health. He therefore encouraged farmers to adopt safer and more sustainable farming methods, including the use of organic fertilisers made from locally available materials.

Mr Alami further stated that health experts have linked the growing prevalence of diseases such as cancer, peptic ulcers, and other health complications to the widespread use of chemicals in food production.

He questioned why some of the agro-chemicals commonly used in Uganda and other African countries are not widely used in parts of Europe where many of them are manufactured, arguing that concerns over their impact on human health and the environment may be a contributing factor.

Agricultural experts continue to encourage farmers to strike a balance between productivity and sustainability by adopting environmentally friendly farming practices. The promotion of organic fertilisers and the responsible use of agro-inputs is seen as a key step towards improving soil health, increasing food safety, and ensuring long-term agricultural productivity in the Lango Sub-region.
