The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), following guidance from the Ministry of Education and Sports, has temporarily postponed the registration of players for its Schools of Excellence programme across the country, including Wisdom High School Akalo in Kole District.

Speaking to our reporter, Wisdom High School Akalo Director Ambrose Ogwal confirmed that the player registration exercise, initially scheduled for August 18 and 19, has been postponed because students are currently attending classes.

Ogwal said the decision is intended to align football activities with the academic calendar, as FUFA continues to expand its Schools of Excellence programme.

He explained that the initiative is a key talent-identification pathway being implemented under the FIFA Talent Development Scheme, aimed at integrating academic education with structured elite youth football development.

Ogwal encouraged parents to support young athletes by helping them remain physically fit and mentally prepared during school holidays and off-seasons.

He further emphasized the importance of registering both primary and secondary school students in FUFA Centres of Excellence, saying the programme provides an early, continuous and structured pathway for young footballers aspiring to reach the elite level.

According to Ogwal, enrolling primary school pupils in the relevant age categories gives coaches an opportunity to develop fundamental technical skills, discipline and tactical understanding from an early age.

Under the FUFA Technical Master Plan, 11 schools have reportedly been designated and signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) to serve as regional football talent hubs.

Among them are St. Joseph’s College Layibi in Gulu and St. Charles Lwanga in Koboko, which has been designated as a Boys’ Football School of Excellence.

Wisdom High School Akalo in Kole District has been designated as a Girls’ Football School of Excellence, covering the Northern and West Nile regions.

The postponement is expected to allow FUFA and participating schools to better coordinate player registration with the academic calendar while maintaining a structured pathway for identifying and developing Uganda’s young football talent.
