The Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, has urged Ugandans to take a firm stand against corruption and poor governance, describing such efforts as a modern form of martyrdom for the good of the nation.

Bishop Wanok made the remarks during his homily at the Uganda Martyrs Cathedral while presiding over celebrations to mark Uganda Martyrs Day.

This year’s commemoration was held at individual parishes across the country following restrictions on large gatherings at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine due to concerns over an Ebola outbreak in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo-DRC.

In his message, the Bishop expressed concern over the widespread corruption in the country, noting that many Ugandans continue to suffer because of dishonest practices, particularly among leaders. He observed that Uganda would have achieved greater levels of development if corruption had been effectively addressed.

Bishop Wanok emphasized that corruption has tarnished the country’s image and hindered progress, urging citizens and leaders alike to resist the temptation to engage in corrupt practices and instead uphold integrity and accountability.

The Bishop further encouraged Christians to draw inspiration from the Uganda Martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for their faith. He called on believers to remain steadfast in their commitment to God and to emulate the courage, faith, and conviction demonstrated by the martyrs.

He also urged Christians to repent of their sins and strengthen their relationship with God, especially during challenging times in their families, workplaces, churches, and communities.
