MP Julius Acon Bua redirects marathon funds to drill three boreholes in Otuke

The Member of Parliament for Otuke County, Julius Acon Bua, has redirected funds raised through his 2026 Marathon Run to finance the drilling of three boreholes worth Shs75 million, aimed at improving access to safe and clean water in communities across Otuke East Constituency.

Speaking in an exclusive telephone interview with the Radio Wa News Desk upon his return from the 2026 Marathon held in England, United Kingdom, Hon. Acon said the boreholes will be drilled in Okwalonyim Village in Omwonylee Parish, Ogor Sub-county; Barapua Village in Ogwete Sub-county; and Acoke Cell in Okwongo Town Council.

The legislator revealed that site surveys have already been completed at all the selected locations, paving the way for drilling works to commence soon. He explained that the decision to redirect the marathon funds was intended to address the persistent shortage of safe and clean water affecting many communities in the constituency.

Meanwhile, Thomas Okello, the NRM Chairperson for Okwongo Town Council and the coordinator of NRM chairpersons across all sub-counties and town councils in Otuke District, confirmed that officials recently visited Acoke Cell to conduct a site survey ahead of the planned drilling.

Okello noted that residents of Acoke Cell have relied on a shallow well for many years, exposing them to waterborne diseases and other public health risks.

He expressed optimism that the three boreholes will significantly improve access to clean and safe water while reducing the long distances residents—especially women and children—travel in search of water.

According to Okello, residents have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will improve public health and enhance their quality of life.

The planned boreholes are expected to ease water scarcity, improve sanitation and public health, and provide sustainable access to safe drinking water for hundreds of households across the beneficiary communities in Otuke East Constituency.
