Heavy rains and strong winds in Kwania District have caused widespread destruction, leaving several residents injured, houses damaged and crop gardens destroyed across more than five parishes.

The LC3 Chairperson of Ayabi Town Council, John Denis Ebuu, said the heavy downpour and storm struck unexpectedly after nearly two months of dry weather, causing significant damage to homes and agricultural fields.

Ebuu said walls of houses collapsed in Adibor and Abebe cells, critically injuring several residents, including former LC3 Vice Chairperson Robson Ogwang, Otoo Moses and members of his family, as well as another resident identified only as Okuja.

He said local leaders are working with the local government and disaster management committees to assess the extent of the destruction and mobilise urgent assistance for families whose homes have been damaged or destroyed.

Ebuu confirmed local leaders working with disaster management committees to assess the extent of the destruction.

Meanwhile, the LC3 Chairperson of Ayabi Subcounty, Alele Bosco, said several acres of food crops, including simsim, sunflower and cassava, were either flattened by strong winds or washed away by the heavy rains.

Alele warned that the destruction could worsen food insecurity among farming households in the area, particularly if affected families are unable to recover before the next planting season.

He said he has instructed parish authorities to assess villages in Alac, Ojwiye and parts of Ogwil Parish and compile a list of households whose homes and gardens were affected.

According to Alele, the assessment report will be submitted to the District Disaster Management Committee and the Office of the Prime Minister to seek relief assistance for the affected communities.

Alele confirmed instructing parish authorities to assess and compile lisst of households whose homes and gardens were affected.

The LC2 Chairperson of Ogwil Parish in Ayabi Subcounty, Ongura Bosco, also confirmed that the heavy rainstorm, which occurred at around 11:00 p.m., caused extensive damage to houses and food crops in the area.
