The Head Teacher of Aroca Seed Secondary School in Apac Municipality, Elok Martin, has urged Members of Parliament from the Lango sub-region to prioritize upgrading Uganda Technical College Lira into a fully-fledged University of Science and Technology.
Speaking in a telephone interview, Elok emphasized that elevating the institution would expand access to specialized education focused on practical, hands-on training and high-impact research. He noted that such a transformation would play a key role in fostering innovation and promoting sustainable development in the region.
While acknowledging the government’s ongoing support toward infrastructure development at the college, Elok stressed the need to take the next step by advancing the institution’s status. He argued that a university focused on science and technology would produce skilled, self-reliant, and competitive graduates ready for the national labor market.
He further pointed out that equipping young people with employable technical skills could significantly reduce unemployment and crime rates within communities.
Elok added that science and technology universities are well-positioned to address both local and global challenges by generating practical solutions in areas such as agriculture and healthcare, while maintaining high standards in research and education.
The proposed upgrade of UTC Lira reflects a growing call for investment in practical education, with leaders viewing it as a strategic move to empower youth and accelerate socio-economic transformation in the Lango sub-region and beyond.
