Lira NRM vice chairperson calls for unity ahead of LC1 and village council elections

The Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Lira District, George Abdul, has urged party members to put aside internal divisions, rally behind the party’s official flag bearers, and discourage independent candidacies that could weaken the NRM’s performance in the upcoming local council elections.

Abdul made the remarks while addressing NRM leaders in Agali Sub-county ahead of the village barazas scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 22.

He said the NRM leadership has embarked on a nationwide grassroots mobilization campaign aimed at securing decisive victories in the forthcoming Village Women Council and Local Council I (LC I) elections.

According to Abdul, the campaign seeks to strengthen party unity, increase voter turnout, and encourage members to support candidates officially endorsed by the NRM under the “One Party, One Candidate” principle.

He emphasized that village-level leadership structures form the foundation of the party’s political strength and urged party leaders and supporters to actively engage communities rather than remain passive observers.

The former Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Otuke also appealed to citizens to allow elected leaders adequate time to implement their campaign pledges, stressing the need to promote unity and development after elections instead of engaging in premature political contests.

His remarks come as the NRM intensifies preparations for the village elections through nationwide mobilization efforts targeting party leaders and supporters at the grassroots.

According to the party’s electoral calendar, village barazas to verify candidates and organize supporters will commence on July 22, followed by the Village Women Council elections on July 23 and the LC I Chairperson elections on July 28.
