In a powerful demonstration of community support and empowerment, Santa Okot, the Member of Parliament for Aruu North County, generously donated Shs 10 million to six women’s groups in Acholibur town council and Acholibur sub-county on Monday, 2 September 2024. This substantial donation marks a significant step towards enhancing household incomes and fostering economic independence among local women.

The donation event, held at Acholibur town council, was a testament to MP Okot’s commitment to her constituents and her dedication to uplifting the community. The funds are intended to support various income-generating activities and provide a financial boost to families striving to overcome economic challenges.

“I am thrilled to be here today to fulfil my commitment to supporting our wonderful women’s groups. This Shs 10 million is more than just financial aid; it’s an investment in your future and a testament to your strength and resilience,” MP Okot said, addressing the gathered beneficiaries. “I urge you to use this money wisely and ensure that it benefits not just your own households but the entire community. Transparency and accountability are key.”

The women, who had been eagerly awaiting this support, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the MP’s generosity. Alimo-gum Roselyn, a member of the Mon-yele Foundation and resident of Gen-central parish, shared her appreciation: “We are incredibly thankful to MP Santa Okot for this invaluable support. The funds, combined with the training we have received, will significantly enhance our ability to provide for our families and drive positive change in our community.”

Alice Nyeko, another member of the Mon-yele group, highlighted the practical impact of the donation: “This assistance will enable us to engage in agricultural activities without the burden of high-interest loans from banks. It’s a tremendous relief and will greatly contribute to our economic stability.”

Lakot Alice from Wigweng parish also expressed her gratitude while acknowledging the strategic focus of the initiative. “We appreciate MP Okot’s support for women and children. Although men are not included in this particular initiative, we are grateful for the targeted support that addresses specific needs,” she said.

District Councillor Wokorach Godwin commended the MP’s dedication and encouraged the women to make the most of the opportunity. “Hon. Okot has shown tremendous support for our community. It’s crucial that you use this money wisely to achieve long-lasting benefits. Let’s honour her commitment by being responsible stewards of these resources,” Wokorach urged.

Wokorach further warned against speaking ill of elected leaders while their terms are still ongoing. “There are some people being manipulated for political gain by individuals who are looking to contest in upcoming elections. I want to caution you to avoid such acts and allow the elected leaders to do their work,” he said. “When their terms end, you (voters) can then ask them what they have accomplished,” he added.

MP Okot also reflected on the origins of the women’s groups, which were formed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. “These groups came together in a time of need, and today, I am proud to support their continued growth and success. Let this be a beacon of hope and a reminder of the positive change that collective effort and community support can bring,” she added.

The event was part of a broader community engagement effort, including the GROW project, designed to further empower and uplift the residents of Acholibur town council and beyond. The generous donation serves as a powerful example of how targeted support can drive meaningful progress and improve the lives of many.
