The Kitgum District Health Department on Wednesday reported three additional suspected cases of cholera in Lobene East village, Lugwar parish, Labongo Akwang subcounty.

The three new suspected cases are from the same polygamous family, headed by a 48-year-old man, and live near a dam of contaminated water, according to the Kitgum District Surveillance Focal Person, Mr. Titus Komakech.

Komakech revealed that two of the three cases tested positive for cholera strain one, while the result for the third is still pending. This brings the total number of suspected cholera cases in Kitgum district to four, all from the same family. Mr. Komakech explained that when the surveillance team visited the village and the home, 37 contacts were identified, one of whom displayed symptoms and was taken to hospital for further treatment.

He added that the three samples are currently on their way to the government’s analytical laboratory for confirmation. In the meantime, Akwang HCIII has been tasked with carrying out community sensitisation efforts immediately.
