The meeting focused on the forthcoming Kampala Storage Terminal at Namwabula Village in Kiringente Sub-county (to be commissioned by H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa – The President of the Republic of Uganda, on Thursday this week) and the opportunities the project will create for the people of Mpigi District and its neighborhood.
Key issues discussed included infrastructure development, particularly the improvement of the Buyala–Nakirebe road and other roads connecting to the facility. The meeting also emphasised environmental protection, effective coordination with KCCA, and collaboration regarding the Buyala waste management facility.
The district leadership further advocated for deliberate opportunities for local communities, including the availability of tenders for unskilled and semi-skilled workers, as well as prioritisation of suppliers and service providers from Mpigi District.
Other areas discussed included improving access to clean water and electricity in communities surrounding the storage terminal, as well as ensuring that the district benefits from the revenue generated by the facility.
The leadership also expressed readiness to strengthen Katonga Technical Institute and work with relevant stakeholders to equip local residents with technical skills, particularly in oil and gas-related studies, enabling them to take advantage of employment and business opportunities arising from the project.
The revamping of the railway line was also highlighted as a key component in supporting transportation, connectivity and the long-term development of the area.
In summary, the meeting was successful and reaffirmed the commitment of Mpigi District Local Government and UNOC to ensuring that the Kampala Storage Terminal contributes meaningfully to infrastructure development, employment, skills development, environmental protection and inclusive economic growth in Mpigi District.
Mpigi District is ready to partner for development and ensure that local communities benefit from the opportunities brought by the oil and gas sector.
