As the day for celebrating the Kabaka’s 70th birthday on 13th April 2025 approaches, leaders in various capacities have encouraged everyone to participate in this campaign to fight HIV/AIDS. Speaking to journalists in Kawempe Division, Kampala district, the Headteacher of Midland High School Kawempe Campus, Mr Kyaasa Francis, explained the purpose of this campaign and how prepared they are as a school.
“On behalf of the school, I want to thank the Kabaka of Buganda Kingdom for initiating this campaign, specifically to fight against HIV/AIDS. As Midland High School, we urge young people to abstain from sex until the right time, when they are married. I also take this opportunity to call upon the general public to participate in the run,” he said.
He also spoke about the new school curriculum, describing it as a positive development, although he highlighted that it requires funding. “On that note, I request the government to remove taxes on laboratory requirements. To the parents, we appeal to you to continue supporting students with all the help they need, especially financially,” he explained.
In the same vein, the Vice Chairman of the Kampala Irish Potatoes Traders Association, Mr Njumba Samuel, confirmed their participation in the birthday run and appealed to their customers and the general public to join the fight against HIV and AIDS.
“I thank the Kabaka of Buganda Kingdom for this campaign, as the funds collected will be used to fight this deadly disease. By doing so, people living with HIV/AIDS will be able to access medication through the kingdom’s health programmes,” he said.
The Vice Chairman also provided an update on the business, stating that they have decided to slightly increase the prices of Irish potatoes due to the weather conditions in areas where they source the potatoes, such as Kenya and Tanzania.
Additionally, the Chairman of Namayiba Taxi Park, Mr Faizo Lule, advised Ugandans who will join them in the run to be very careful on the road.
“As Namayiba Taxi Park, we are going to participate in the Kabaka’s birthday run this Sunday. I therefore encourage all men to remain faithful to their partners, as they are often the ones who initiate matters regarding sex. As the Kabaka said, we should protect the girl child. We also request Ugandans participating in the run to be vigilant on the road and to remember to follow the guidelines set by the traffic police,” he said.
