Roadside vendors in Nansana municipality have been allowed to continue operating along the road reserves.
The Resident district commissioner (RDC) of Nansana municipality, Charles Lwanga, issued the directive following a meeting between roadside traders and local authorities.
Roadside vendors along Matunga – Mabanda – Bombo Road in Nansana municipality, Wakiso district in Kampala metropolitan area had previously been barred by the local authorities from operating along the road reserves due to concerns over road safety and urban sanitation. During the meeting, which was attended by division town clerks of Gombe Kasimu and Nansana’s commercial officer, Sserubiri, traders accused the local authorities of unfairly targeting them.
The meeting was convened following a petition by traders to the RDC requesting permission to continue operating along the roadside. Lwanga ordered local authorities to allow the traders to operate in the streets while the municipality makes plans for more sustainable alternatives that do not harm vendors’ livelihoods. He also advised the vendors to embrace government livelihood programs such as Parish Development Model (PDM) and Presidential Initiative on Wealth and Job Creation (EMYOOGA), which he said have the potential to significantly improve their quality of lives.
Lwanga further urged the public to report corrupt officials in Nansana municipality to him, expressing concern that corruption is not addressed, and the quality-of-service delivery will suffer. He noted that Nansana municipality has a reputation for corruption and shared that a land broker had attempted to bribe him but was caught and imprisoned.
