The Electoral Commission Returning Officer for Kalangala District, Ronald Agaba, today declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Idah Nabayiga the winner of the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.

Speaking at the district tally centre located at the District Hall, Agaba announced that Nabayiga secured 12,642 votes out of the 20,611 valid votes cast, defeating her four opponents.

“I, Ronald Agaba, being the Returning Officer for Kalangala Electoral District, having added up the number of votes cast as recorded in each Declaration of Results Form in accordance with Section 72 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, declare that the total number of valid votes cast for candidates are as follows: Idah Nabayiga of the NRM Party, 12,642 votes; Irene Nampala of the NUP Party, 7,474 votes; Sharifah Babirye, Independent, 244 votes; Hellen Flavia Nagawa, Independent, 217 votes; and Agnes Nasuuna, Independent, 34 votes,” he announced.

He subsequently declared Nabayiga the duly elected Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District.

“Accordingly, as Returning Officer for Kalangala Electoral District and in accordance with Section 72 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap 177, I declare Nabayiga Idah, who has obtained the largest number of votes, to be the elected candidate for the position of Woman Representative to Parliament for Kalangala District,” he said.

Agaba further revealed that a total of 21,038 ballot papers were counted, of which 427 were rejected as invalid, while 67 were recorded as spoilt ballot papers.

However, leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP) expressed dissatisfaction with the results announced by the Electoral Commission.

The by-election was conducted to fill the vacancy left by the late Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away in April this year.

Kalangala District comprises eight islands and has more than 45,000 registered voters.

The newly elected legislator, Idah Nabayiga, was born in 1979 and previously served in Uganda’s 10th Parliament.
