Buganda Premier Charles Peter Mayiga has advised the government to install incinerators as an immediate and long-term solution to address the country’s ongoing waste management crisis.
Speaking to the victims of the Kiteezi tragedy today while distributing relief items, including foodstuffs, sanitary equipment, and more, he emphasised the need for the government to acquire incinerators to convert collected waste from households and other sources into valuable resources such as energy, briquettes, manure, and others.
He also advised cities and other urban authorities to educate their residents on the importance of separating and sorting waste to reduce the vast quantities collected daily from the public. Mayiga further called upon all those with kind hearts to continue supporting the affected people with basic necessities and to give them hope.
It should be remembered that on 10th August 2024, the Kiteezi landfill tragedy struck the country, where heaps of rubbish buried houses, claiming over 35 lives and destroying property worth millions of shillings. The government and other concerned authorities are still working on ways to assist those affected.
