Residents of Makerere I Parish, including Mukwenda, Mukubira and Mini-Triangle zones in Kawempe Division, have joined the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in cleaning their communities.
The exercise is part of KCCA’s efforts to promote a clean and healthy environment, with public health reports indicating that many diseases affecting Ugandans are preventable.
Members of the Makerere University Abasoga Nseete Association also participated in the exercise. They said keeping the environment clean is everyone’s responsibility, which motivated them to join other residents in the campaign.
KCCA Director of Public Health and Environment, Dr Sarah Zalwango, emphasised the importance of the campaign, saying it aims to sensitise the public about the dangers of living in an unhygienic environment, which can lead to serious illnesses and death.
KCCA has continued to engage residents on the importance of taking responsibility for the waste they generate. The authority encourages the public to dispose of waste responsibly, sort it at source, use authorised waste collection channels and avoid littering and indiscriminate dumping.
Residents have also been urged to handle and store waste properly to protect public health and the environment.
Across the East African Community, leaders have encouraged citizens to participate in environmental cleaning activities. In Rwanda, President Paul Kagame has participated in community cleaning exercises, emphasising the importance of leaders setting an example to encourage more people to join such initiatives.
