The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, the Most Rev. Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, has today inaugurated All Saints Cathedral, Kampala, as a deanery and installed the Very Rev. Canon Dr Rebecca Nyegenye as its Dean.

The ceremony also saw the ordination of six ordinands as deacons and one deacon, Rev. A. Shadrach, as a priest.

Preaching during the service, Bishop Jackson Balwa urged the newly ordained clergy to remain faithful to their calling, saying people look up to religious leaders as examples of genuine Christian living.

He cautioned them against betraying the trust placed in them, emphasising that Christians are looking for leaders whose lives reflect the teachings of Christ.

Quoting from Acts 1:4-8, which highlights the promise and power of the Holy Spirit, Bishop Balwa reminded the clergy of the spiritual responsibility that comes with their ministry.

The six ordained deacons are Charity Kobusingye, Witness Ainomugisha, Peninnah Nayebale, Rebecca Kataate, Annet and Samuel Kisakye.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Kaziimba urged Christians to welcome clergy posted to their respective parishes and work with them, instead of rejecting them without understanding the process through which they are trained and appointed.

He challenged Christians to appreciate the work and sacrifices of clergy, while urging the newly ordained ministers to remain faithful servants of God.

The ordained clergy took their oaths and received their licences authorising them to carry out their ministerial responsibilities, alongside the Diocese of Kampala Constitution, a copy of the Holy Scriptures and letters of orders.

They pledged to fulfil their responsibilities with God’s help.

The Archbishop also updated the congregation on the ongoing construction of the cathedral, revealing that UGX 32 billion has so far been spent on the project. He said the church requires an additional UGX 1.5 billion to complete the 5,000-seater cathedral.

Kaziimba further announced that he is expected to retire in August next year, paving the way for the Church of Uganda to receive its 10th Archbishop.
