KCCA meets traders as Tooro Kingdom enthrones new king

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) leaders have met representatives of traders in Kampala to discuss ways of easing challenges affecting the business community, as the Kingdom of Tooro has also enthroned a new king, His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.

The KCCA meeting was led by Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki, Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo and Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi, and brought together leaders from the National Entrepreneurs Traders Association (NETA), Federation of Uganda Traders Association (FUTA), among other trader groups.

Speaking during the meeting, KCCA Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki appreciated the traders’ leaders for working with government in efforts to fight poverty.

Buzeki said traders’ requests to introduce Sunday and evening markets have been put on hold following advice from President Yoweri Museveni, pending further investigations.

She also said the process concerning traders who lost their goods in floods in October last year is being handled by the Internal Security Organisation.

FUTA leader John Kabanda appreciated KCCA for organising the meeting and urged the authority to continue engaging with traders to find solutions to their challenges.

Kabanda also called on authorities to work with reliable sources to secure the release of traders who were arrested over street trading.

He further appealed to KCCA not to allow City Square to be given to investors, saying the area should remain available to traders.

The traders’ leaders called on KCCA to address their concerns and maintain regular engagement with them.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom of Tooro has enthroned a new king, His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, at Karuziika Palace.

The ceremony was attended by President Yoweri Museveni, government ministers and other dignitaries.

In his address, King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I thanked the government for its support to the Kingdom of Tooro and pledged to unite the people of Tooro.

President Museveni congratulated the Batooro upon the enthronement of their new king and pledged that government would continue working with traditional institutions to fight poverty through government programmes.

The enthronement follows the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
