The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), through Hon. David Kabanda, has confirmed that the pressure group supports a private member’s bill seeking to amend the laws governing the office of the Leader of the Opposition.
Addressing journalists in Kampala, Kabanda, the former PLU Secretary General, said he had been sent by the group’s chairperson and Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to clarify the group’s position on several issues.
Kabanda thanked Hon. Dennis Namara for seeking permission from the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, to introduce the bill.
“We want to thank Hon. Dennis Namara for seeking permission from the Speaker to prepare a private member’s bill. If the President, the Speaker, ministers and commissioners of Parliament can be removed from office by Parliament, why should the Leader of the Opposition be different?” he said.
He added that PLU fully supports Namara’s proposal.
“As PLU, we are behind Hon. Namara. The about 340 Members of Parliament who subscribe to PLU can support this initiative,” Kabanda said.
Kabanda also dismissed allegations by Jimmy Akena that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba is involved in killing people, describing the claims as false.
He further alleged that Akena could be worried because of accusations involving his wife and said that if investigations establish any wrongdoing, the law would take its course.
Kabanda also claimed that PLU has the support of about 340 Members of Parliament and challenged Akena to hand over leadership of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) to PLU, arguing that the pressure group enjoys greater parliamentary backing.
He called on all MPs affiliated with PLU to support National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates in the forthcoming Local Council elections.
“PLU is not a political party, but we work with the NRM. We therefore urge all our members to vote for NRM candidates in the Local Council elections,” he said.
Kabanda also appealed to the Katikkiro of the Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, to continue promoting unity. He added that PLU condemns hate speech and encouraged members of the public to report anyone involved in the embezzlement of public funds.
