Following the death of Kikuube District Chairperson Peter Banura on April 4, 2026, the Electoral Commission today conducted a by-election to fill the vacant position. The election follows a series of electoral activities, including voter registration, nomination of candidates, and campaigns.
Banura, a son of Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza, died after being knocked by a taxi in Butyamba-Kamunsi Village, Kiziranfumbi Town Council, along the Hoima-Fort Portal Highway.
According to the Kikuube District Returning Officer, Emmanuel Twine, the district has 330 polling stations and 144,999 registered voters who are expected to exercise their constitutional right to vote between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Twine said that only voters who will be in the queue by 4:00 p.m. will be allowed to cast their ballots before the voting exercise is officially closed and the counting process begins.
Meanwhile, the Woman Member of Parliament by-election campaigns in Kalangala District continue ahead of polling day scheduled for June 24, 2026.
The Bujumba County Member of Parliament and former Kalangala District Chairperson, William Lugoloobi, has accused leaders elected on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket in Kalangala District of failing to follow up on key government and donor-funded projects. He said this had led to the collapse of development initiatives worth more than Shs266 billion.
Lugoloobi made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview with journalists on the sidelines of National Resistance Movement (NRM) mobilisation meetings led by the party’s Vice Chairperson for Buganda Region, Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, and other senior party officials.
Additionally, the NRM Director of Communications and Publicity, Emmanuel Lumala Dombo, while campaigning in Kalangala District yesterday, emphasized that the party leadership would demand accountability from all NRM-elected leaders.
“As a party, we shall demand accountability from all our elected leaders. We shall carry out assessments, and whoever is not performing as promised will face the consequences,” Dombo said.
Candidates contesting for the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament seat are Idah Nabayiga of the NRM, Irene Nampala of the NUP, and independent candidates Helen Flavia Nagawa, Sharifa Babirye, and Agnes Nasuuna.
Campaigns will end on June 22, 2026, while voting will take place on June 24, 2026.
