The Ministry of Internal Affairs has intensified its mobile passport enrollment program to bring passport application and renewal services closer to eligible Ugandans, particularly those who are unable to access services at its offices.
Recently, a team from the ministry led by spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi, together with immigration officer Lydia Namunswa and other officials, visited the Ministry of East African Community Affairs to renew the passport of the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga. The service was provided through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC) Mobile Enrollment Service, and Kadaga commended the ministry for improving service delivery following the successful renewal process.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Mobile Enrollment Kit is reserved for Very Important Persons (VIPs) and individuals with special circumstances. These include patients who are too ill to travel to the ministry but urgently require passports for medical treatment abroad, government officials who are unable to visit the ministry for biometric enrollment, and other applicants with exceptional cases.
The ministry emphasizes that the mobile service does not attract any additional charges. Applicants pay the standard passport fees of UGX 250,000 for an ordinary passport and UGX 400,000 for an express passport, while applications are processed through the online passport system.
The initiative is part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ ongoing efforts to improve access to passport services by making them more efficient, secure, accessible, and customer-centred.
The ministry also notes that about two million Ugandans currently hold passports, representing less than three percent of Uganda’s population of 45.9 million people, according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics. The country’s population is projected to grow to approximately 80 million by 2050.
