Members of Parliament and other leaders in various capacities today gathered at the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, for the official handover ceremony of the newly appointed Secretary General, Hon. Fadil Twaha.
Speaking as the chief guest, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah Oboth-Oboth, urged PLU members to shun corruption, which he described as one of Uganda’s biggest challenges.
“Corruption is the biggest problem we have. There should be no scandals involving PLU members in any form of corruption,” he said.
He further stressed that government opportunities should be utilised responsibly, arguing that failure often stems from individual conduct rather than limitations within the system.
“President Museveni has given us opportunities to thrive. We can only blame ourselves if we fail,” he added.
The Speaker also called for inclusivity within PLU, saying the organisation should remain open to all Ugandans.
“PLU is for everyone. Every Ugandan should be a member,” he said.
He concluded by urging Twaha and his team to prioritise discipline, results and collaboration with state institutions.
The ceremony was also addressed by PLU Vice Chairperson Michael Nuwagira Kaguta, who called for unity, forgiveness and stronger coordination as the organisation continues to expand.
Nuwagira acknowledged the challenges faced during the formation of the organisation and apologised to members who may have felt excluded during the process.
“If there were mobilisers who were disappointed, please forgive us,” he said.
He praised the outgoing Secretary General, Hon. David Kabanda, for laying the administrative foundation of PLU and commended members who contributed resources to ensure the success of the ceremony.
Aspiring Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), Juma Witonze, who was among the attendees, congratulated the new Secretary General and pledged to work closely with PLU.
Hon. Twaha, who represents Tingey County in Kapchorwa District in Parliament, thanked the organisation’s leadership for entrusting him with the position and pledged not to disappoint its members.
