The deputy chairperson for administration at the Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators (UTOF), Mayambala Mustafa, has expressed concern over rising fuel prices, saying they are placing a heavy burden on the transport sector.
“Fuel prices are high and are affecting us greatly. Passengers are unwilling to accept higher transport fares, so we plan to engage taxi owners on this matter. Since the Trade Order came into effect, many of our passengers have been affected,” he said.
However, UTOF General Secretary Calton Sekyaya commended the government for monitoring fuel prices through UNOC, saying prices would likely have been even higher without the intervention.

Currently, petrol prices at most fuel stations in Kampala range between UGX 6,250 and UGX 6,619 per litre, while diesel sells for between UGX 6,105 and UGX 6,400 per litre.
Across the region, a litre of petrol costs about UGX 6,049 in Kenya, UGX 5,554 in Tanzania, and UGX 7,325 in Rwanda. Diesel costs about UGX 6,298 in Kenya, UGX 5,822 in Tanzania, and UGX 5,498 in Rwanda, although prices vary by location.
In the 2026/27 national budget, Uganda allocated UGX 473.51 billion to the minerals, oil and gas sector. The funding is intended to support mineral exploration, capitalise the Uganda National Mining Company (UNMC), and advance the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.
