The Chief Magistrate of Mengo, Her Worship Doreen Ajuna, has today administered the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office to councillors of Rubaga Urban Council together with the Mayor of the Division.

She reminded them that administering oaths does not mean that if they are brought before her in court, she will not apply the law accordingly. She therefore urged them not to engage in acts that may lead to prosecution.

The majority of the councillors sworn in are from the National Unity Platform (NUP), followed by members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and others.

“I am here to administer the oaths. I urge you to perform your roles as the law requires. Your role is to serve the people and they expect service beyond self-interest,” she said.

Although the biggest percentage of councillors successfully took oath, Zziwa Robert, one of the elected councillors, missed the opportunity because he is currently in jail. The Clerk to Council said that once the councillor is released, he will be able to take oath after formally writing to their office.

In his speech, the Mayor of Rubaga Division, His Worship Zacchy Mberaze Mawula, thanked God and the people who supported him in retaining his position, and promised to work with all councillors for the betterment of Rubaga Urban Council.

“I am thankful to God that the people of Rubaga once again entrusted me with this responsibility. I pledge to work tirelessly for their well-being and to ensure they benefit from government programs. During the last term, we managed to work on 10 roads, and we believe that even this term there are more roads we are going to work on. We are also going to ensure that drainage channels, including that of Nalukolongo, are worked on. I will work with all councillors irrespective of their political affiliation. I will also work with the Lord Mayor, Eng. Ronald Balimwezo, and the KCCA team to lobby for our people,” he said.

Hon. Abdul Nasirwinyi, councillor for Mutundwe and one of the aspirants for the position of Speaker of Rubaga Division Urban Council, emphasized the need for unity.

“I am contesting for the speakership of this Division. If given the opportunity to serve, I will unite all councillors. We should put our parties aside and focus on working for the people of Rubaga. When people vote for us, they expect nothing but service. Let us therefore give them the service they deserve. That is my priority,” he said.

The Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Rubaga, Moses Ariho, appealed to the councillors and the Mayor to make use of his office and focus on serving the people of Rubaga. He also reminded leaders to avoid corruption, saying that this term should be one of “no sleep on corruption.”

The NRM Vice Chairperson for Rubaga, Ivan Kamuntu, congratulated all the councillors and advised them to behave well, noting that good conduct can open doors for leaders and create opportunities to lobby for their people.

The councillors were handed instruments of power including the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, the Local Government Act, the KCCA Act, and the Rules of Procedure.

Meanwhile, the former Speaker of the 11th Parliament, Hon. Anita Among, congratulated the newly elected heads of the 12th Parliament and wished them good luck following yesterday’s voting exercise.

Hon. Markson Oboth won the position of Speaker, while Hon. Thomas Tayebwa retained the position of Deputy Speaker. Both pledged to restore integrity in Parliament.
