In 1908, Anna Maria Jarvis honoured her late mother during a worship service in the United States of America. Reports indicate that her mother had always expressed a desire for a special day dedicated to celebrating mothers. Jarvis later spearheaded the commemoration of Mother’s Day.
In 1914, the 28th President of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson, signed a proclamation on May 9, 1914, officially declaring the second Sunday in May as a national holiday.
It is against this background that Mother’s Day continues to be commemorated worldwide, including in Uganda. During this occasion, many people express appreciation to their mothers and to women they consider mother figures regardless of status.
Yesterday, as the world marked the second Sunday of May, many people showered their mothers with kind words and gifts in appreciation of their love and sacrifices.
The Bunyangabu District Woman Member of Parliament-elect, Hon. Sarah Kabarokole, through her official social media account, described a mother’s prayer as a powerful force that holds families together.
“Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mothers out there. Your love, sacrifices and endless prayers hold families together and shape the future. May God strengthen you, bless you abundantly, and fill your hearts with joy today and forever,” she said.
In the same spirit, Engineer Joseph Bakulumpagi appreciated both his wife and mother.
“Happy Mother’s Day to the most loving and amazing woman I know. Watching you love, nurture, and care for our two little boys fills my heart with admiration every single day. You are not only a wonderful wife, but also the perfect mother for our family. Our boys are truly blessed to have you. We love you more than words can say. To you, my beautiful mother, may the good Lord keep you safe for me,” he said.

Although many people appreciated their mothers during the celebrations, not all messages could be captured.
However, despite the celebrations, mothers continue to face several challenges in today’s society. According to research and public opinion, many young people have gone astray due to a lack of proper parental guidance and care. This serves as food for thought to all mothers to continue nurturing and guiding the future generation.
As mothers pray for the success and wellbeing of their children, they are also encouraged to remind them about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases, which remain widespread and deadly despite being preventable.
Parents are further encouraged to educate young people that HIV/AIDS is real and that engaging in unprotected sex with people whose HIV status is unknown puts their health and lives at risk.
