The Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Sharifa Buzeki, has led a city clean-up exercise in Kawempe I Parish, Kawempe Division, as part of the authority’s ongoing Weyonje campaign aimed at improving sanitation in Kampala.
During the exercise, residents welcomed the initiative but raised concerns about the limited number of garbage collection trucks operating in the city.
Responding to the concerns, Buzeki said KCCA would increase the number of garbage trucks by five to improve waste collection across Kampala.
“When we started this initiative, some people said we would stop after a few days because the garbage in Kampala is too much. I urge those responsible for collecting garbage not to leave any waste behind but to ensure that all of it is collected,” she said.
She also called upon local leaders to sustain the clean-up efforts even after KCCA teams leave their communities.
“Ugandans want service delivery. When we leave this place, please continue with this initiative. Sanitation is essential for everyone,” Buzeki added.
On the issue of drainage, Buzeki acknowledged that KCCA is operating under limited funding but said the authority would begin by rehabilitating and cleaning major drainage channels across Kampala.
She also revealed that KCCA has allocated a special budget to tackle the growing problem of bed bugs in some communities.
“We have set aside a special budget for that, and we shall begin this financial year. We therefore urge local leaders to identify the affected zones so that implementation can start in those areas,” she said.
Buzeki further encouraged residents, particularly unemployed youth, to apply for jobs that KCCA will soon advertise.
Meanwhile, the Director of Public Health and Environment at KCCA, Dr. Sarah Zalwango, urged residents to maintain proper sanitation, noting that Kawempe Division recently emerged as the best-performing division in the Weyonje cleanliness competition.

“We urge the general public to always keep your households clean even after we have left,” Zalwango said.
The Kawempe I councillor, Mutesi Madiina, commended KCCA for extending the clean-up campaign to the area.
“We have several drainage channels in our division. We therefore appreciate the KCCA team for cleaning up this area,” she said.
Kawempe I Parish comprises seven zones, including Kirokole and Mbogo, among others.
