Following the Electoral Commission’s announcement of the Local Council (LC I and LC II) and Women Council elections, which begin this month, political parties have started preparations to ensure they win the largest number of leadership positions. Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama announced that the first phase of the elections will be held on 28 July 2026 using the lining-up method and will cover LC elections.
Against this background, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) National Treasurer, Hon. Amb. Barbara Nekesa, together with the party’s Director of Mobilisation, Dr Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde, yesterday met executive committee members of the NRM Women’s League and the National Women Council at the party headquarters on Plot 10, Kyadondo Road. The meeting aimed to harmonise preparations and coordinate leaders from the two bodies ahead of the Women Council elections from village to national level, as well as the LC I and LC II chairperson elections across the country.
Meanwhile, the National Unity Platform (NUP) also held a press conference at its headquarters in Makerere Kavule, where party leaders urged members and the public to participate in the upcoming LC I, LC II and Women Council elections. They said elections are an important way for Ugandans to choose leaders who can effectively serve their communities. James Mubiru, a NUP councillor at KCCA, reminded the public that local leaders play a vital role in community development and encouraged citizens to take part in the elections despite the challenges the party often faces during election periods.
