Ugandans elect new LC I chairpersons across the country

Ugandans have today participated in the election of Local Council I (LC I) Chairpersons, whose previous term expired some time ago. The exercise was conducted in all the 71,214 villages across the country under the supervision of the Electoral Commission.
In Kasaato Zone, Kisenyi II Parish, Kampala Central Division, Kampala, Kawuma Susan was declared the winner after defeating the incumbent LC I Chairperson, Kiwana Nkoyooyo, who had served the area for more than 20 years.

Speaking to journalists after his victory, Kawuma thanked residents for entrusting him with leadership and pledged to work towards the development of the area. He accused the former chairperson of being arrogant, failing to consult residents, and allegedly mismanaging government programs, including the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Kawuma also appealed to those who opposed him during the election to put aside their differences and work together for the development of the community. He promised transparent leadership and equitable access to government programs, including bursary opportunities for children in the area.
However, the outgoing chairperson, Kiwana Nkoyooyo, rejected the election results, alleging that non-residents participated in the voting process. He called on the Electoral Commission to organize fresh elections using the official village register.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission said the LC I elections were generally conducted successfully across the country despite isolated challenges reported in a few areas.
