Gov’t to demolish unfit buildings as youth plan Museveni celebration

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has announced plans to demolish old and unfit buildings located along major streets, starting with Kampala.

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Persis Namuganza, says the exercise will later be extended to other municipalities and urban councils across the country.

Namuganza says owners of buildings found to be in poor condition have been given an opportunity to either renovate the structures or demolish them themselves.

She added that the government will not compensate owners for the demolition exercise.

Namuganza made the remarks while addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala today.

Meanwhile, various youth groups from Uganda and neighbouring countries are expected to gather at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds this Saturday to celebrate what they describe as President Yoweri Museveni’s achievements during his leadership of the country.

The groups say the event is intended to appreciate what they consider to be government achievements, including road construction, electricity connectivity, access to clean water, hospitals and schools.

Senteza John, one of the organisers, said the celebration was long overdue, arguing that young people should recognise what he described as Museveni’s contribution to Uganda’s development and the country’s liberation struggle.

Senteza acknowledged that Uganda continues to face challenges, including corruption and gaps in service delivery, but said he remains optimistic that the government will address them.

He called on young and older people to attend the celebration at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

The event comes shortly after President Museveni marked his 82nd birthday on September 15.

Sekanyo Suleiman, chairman of Nsooba Slaughter House in Kawempe Division, has also joined those appreciating Museveni’s leadership.

Sekanyo congratulated the President on reaching 82 years and said people should appreciate others for their contribution while they are still alive.

He acknowledged that some challenges remain unresolved but said achievements should also be recognised.

On the meat business, Sekanyo said beef prices have increased slightly due to challenges faced by farmers. However, he expressed optimism that prices will return to normal as the rains improve conditions for farmers.
