Uganda’s Vice President, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, has arrived in New Delhi, India, ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.

Alupo was received at Indira Gandhi International Airport by India’s Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Jayant Chaudhary.

She is accompanied by the Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, Diana Mutasingwa, and other senior government officials.

Alupo is representing President Yoweri Museveni at the summit, where Uganda is among the ten BRICS partner countries. She is expected to deliver the President’s message as Uganda seeks to expand trade, investment and strategic economic ties with BRICS member states and partner countries.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi from September 12 to 13 under its 2026 BRICS Chairship.

The chairship is guided by the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” with development, sustainability and innovation among the key areas of focus.

BRICS has become an important platform for cooperation among emerging economies and for advancing the interests of the Global South in multilateral institutions. Its agenda covers development, finance, technology, trade and people-to-people exchanges.

The grouping currently has 11 members, while its partner countries further expand its reach. According to background information on India’s 2026 chairship, BRICS members account for about 49.5 percent of the global population, 40 percent of global GDP and 26 percent of global trade.

The summit comes at a time of global economic fragmentation, technological disruption, geopolitical uncertainty, climate change and growing resource pressures.

The expanded BRICS grouping is expected to provide opportunities for cooperation in areas including development, climate action, technology, energy and financial resilience, as well as discussions on reforms in global institutions.
