Local Council chairpersons in different villages have described the first day of the Local Council register update exercise as generally successful but urged the Electoral Commission to strictly verify voters’ places of residence before registration.
Prince Tibamwenda, the LCI chairperson of Buwanika Zone in Kampala Central Division, said some people who did not reside in the area attempted to register there, but local leaders stopped them.
“The exercise has started well. However, in the morning, some people who do not live in this area wanted to register here by force. I am grateful that it did not happen. I appeal to Electoral Commission officials to verify that every person is a genuine resident of the village before registering them,” he said.
Other local leaders, including Kiwana Nkoyoyo of Kisenyi II, Muzaana Zone Women Leader Amaani Noor, and Muzaana Zone Defence Secretary Kayemba Ibra, also said the exercise had started smoothly and that turnout on the first day was encouraging.
They urged those who had not yet registered to take advantage of the remaining days, noting that the exercise ends on 10 July 2026.
Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi also said the exercise had been successful on its first day. He reminded the public that only Ugandans aged 18 years and above are eligible to participate and stressed that no one is allowed to register in more than one village.
