Yesterday, the Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators (UTOF) organized a meeting to discuss several issues affecting their work. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Chairman Rashid Ssekindi said they are seeking ways to improve their operations.
The meeting, held at Old Kampala Mosque in Kampala, was attended by leaders from various taxi parks across the country, alongside taxi drivers and conductors.
“We appealed to Parliament not to increase taxes on fuel. We cannot raise passenger charges because the number of passengers has reduced,” Ssekindi said. He added that the Minister of Works and Transport could support their SACCOs, citing examples of other groups that have received government assistance to improve their livelihoods.
Fred Ssenoga, representing the union, emphasized the importance of unity among operators. Similarly, the chairman of the New Taxi Park, Badru Sserungogi, noted that some of the issues discussed were new to them. He also pointed out that individual support from the President may not be sufficient, given that taxis are more expensive to operate than boda bodas, highlighting the need for collective effort.
“Today we gathered here to discuss various issues, including increasing police receipts, among others. I believe the President cannot support us individually, so we need unity. Our taxis are more expensive than boda bodas. By being united, we can access loans through the union,” he said.
Ronald Kayanja, the vice chairman of Bwaise Bus Terminal, also appreciated being part of the meeting and expressed optimism that meaningful progress would be made if the resolutions discussed are put into practice.
