The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Deputy Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Rose Namayanja Nsereko, has urged members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to actively participate in politics and leadership.

Namayanja made the remarks yesterday while campaigning for NRM flag bearer Idah Nabayiga ahead of the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election scheduled for June 24, 2026. She was addressing Adventist faithful during Sabbath worship in Kalangala Town Council, Kalangala District.

According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics Dissemination Portal, Kalangala District has more than 74,000 registered voters.

Addressing the congregation, Namayanja challenged the perception held by some Christians that politics is inherently dirty. She argued that the absence of God-fearing individuals in leadership positions contributes to the negative image often associated with politics.

Meanwhile, the NRM Director for Mobilisation, Hon. Rosemary Sseninde, said the ruling party is targeting more than 70 percent of the vote in the forthcoming Kalangala District Woman MP by-election.

Speaking after a meeting with women leaders in Mugoye Sub-county on Saturday, Sseninde expressed confidence that the NRM candidate, Idah Nabayiga, would emerge victorious, citing strong voter support and sustained mobilisation efforts by party structures.

“We are targeting not less than 70 percent. Any person would say they want 100 percent, although it can never be. But of course, we are targeting not less than 70 percent,” Sseninde said.

She noted that the party’s grassroots structures have intensified mobilisation efforts to ensure a decisive victory for the NRM candidate.

As the campaign period draws to a close, several residents of Kalangala District, both those living within the district and others residing elsewhere, have continued to call upon the Electoral Commission to fulfil its mandate of organising, conducting, and supervising regular, free, and fair elections through citizen participation, stakeholder engagement, democracy, and good governance.

Besides NRM’s Idah Nabayiga, other candidates contesting for the seat include Irene Nampala of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and independent candidates Agnes Nasuuna, Sharifa Buzeki, and Flavia Nagawa.

President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the National Chairman of the NRM, is expected to campaign in Kalangala District on Monday next week in support of the party’s candidate ahead of polling day.
